A discovery in the Arizona desert has brought fresh attention to the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, though investigators are urging the public not to jump to conclusions.
Human remains were found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard in the Tucson area, about 15 miles from Guthrie’s home. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the remains appeared to have been there for an extended period. Search-and-rescue deputies responded after the discovery was reported.
Because of the location, people following Guthrie’s disappearance quickly wondered whether the remains could be related to her case. Authorities, however, have made clear that there is currently no indication connecting the remains to Guthrie.
What Authorities Have Confirmed
The sheriff’s department has not publicly identified the person whose remains were found. Officials also have not released a possible cause of death or details about how long the remains may have been in the area beyond saying they appeared to have been there for a significant amount of time.
