The silence was the first thing he noticed.
It was heavier than any scream.
He stood inside the house, listening for something—anything—that might break the stillness.
Nothing came.
Six lives had vanished without warning.
There was no broken window. No damaged lock. No obvious sign that anyone had forced their way inside. The house looked almost exactly as it had before.
And that was what made it so difficult to understand.
Tiny shoes were still lined up beside the front door.
A cartoon remained frozen on the television.
Toys were scattered across the floor as though small hands might return at any moment to pick them up.

Security footage from surrounding streets was searched again and again.
Every possible witness was questioned. Every promising lead was investigated.
