What Acanthosis Nigricans Looks Like
The condition is often described as darkened, thickened skin with a soft or velvet-like texture. It commonly appears around the neck, under the arms, or in the groin area, though the exact location can vary.
Because these areas are often covered by clothing, people may ignore the change for months. Others may assume it is caused by sweat, friction, or poor hygiene. The important difference is that acanthosis nigricans usually involves both color and texture changes, not just surface discoloration.
