For six years, my son Patrick and I planted sunflowers for his twin sister, Lily.

Every spring, we returned to the same patch of land, pressed seeds into the soil, and watched the flowers grow. It became our way of remembering the little girl we lost when they were only six years old.

But last Saturday, before sunrise, we walked into that garden and found something that changed everything.

Every sunflower had been cut down.

Except one.

And hanging from that single remaining stalk was a small white box tied with a ribbon.

The Day We Lost Lily

Patrick and Lily were inseparable twins.

If Patrick laughed, Lily laughed. If Lily cried, Patrick felt it too.

But they were different in one important way.

Lily was fearless.

Patrick was the protector. He noticed danger before anyone else and always tried to keep his sister safe.

One summer afternoon, we were visiting my parents’ farmhouse when the twins asked if they could walk to the pond behind the pasture to feed the ducks.

They carried a bag of stale bread and disappeared down the familiar path.

I never imagined that would be the last time I saw Lily.

When they didn’t return, we searched everywhere.

Neighbors joined us. Deputies checked the fields, the road, and the pond.

Only Patrick came back.

He was covered in mud, soaked from the knees down, and crying so hard he could barely speak.

When he finally grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the water, I knew something terrible had happened.

Near the pond, we found disturbed reeds, muddy ground, and the abandoned bread bag.

The search continued until dark.

But Lily was gone.
