Chicago Firefighter’s Memorial Service Delayed as His Wife Welcomes Their Second Baby
A devastating loss has shaken a Chicago family—and yet, in the middle of the grief, a new beginning has arrived. Firefighter/EMT Michael Altman, just 32, died after suffering critical injuries while battling a fire. In an emotional turn of events, his memorial plans were delayed when his wife, Nora, went into labor with their second child.
A Line-of-Duty Tragedy
Altman was injured during a dangerous response when a floor gave way, sending him into a collapse. He was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt confirmed the loss during a March 17 press briefing, noting that Altman sustained severe injuries while crews worked to put out the blaze.
Those who knew him describe a public servant with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. He also carried a powerful family legacy—he was the fourth generation in his family to serve, continuing a tradition of dedication and sacrifice.
A Funeral Postponed for an Unforgettable Reason
A service was scheduled for March 27, with loved ones, fellow firefighters, and community members preparing to honor his life. But shortly before the planned ceremony, Nora went into labor. Because of the medical emergency and the family’s immediate needs, the department rescheduled the service for a later date.
