He Paid for the Wedding, Then Found Out Where He Stood

Richard Morrison thought he was giving his daughter one last beautiful gift before she began married life. Instead, the wedding he helped finance became the moment he realized how far he had been pushed to the edge of his own family.

For years after the death of his wife, Catherine, Richard had tried to stay close to his daughter Amanda by saying yes whenever she needed help. When she and her fiancé Derek began planning an upscale wedding in Portland, he stepped in again. He covered the venue, flowers, music, photography, and many of the major costs that can turn a wedding from a family celebration into a serious financial commitment.

By the time he wrote the final check, Richard had spent $58,000 on the event. He expected the weekend to be emotional, but meaningful. What he did not expect was to learn, just days before the ceremony, that he was not invited to the rehearsal dinner.

According to the account, Derek told him the dinner was limited to “immediate family only.” The words landed hard. Richard then learned something even more painful: he would not be walking Amanda down the aisle. That role had reportedly been given to Derek’s father and Amanda’s aunt.
