Seeing Him After Two Decades
The reunion was exactly what I expected.
Old classmates exchanging stories. People comparing careers, families, and life experiences. Everyone seemed older, different, but somehow familiar.
Then I saw Dorian.
He wasn’t the teenager from my memories anymore. He had changed, but somehow his eyes still looked the same.
When he noticed me, he smiled.
Not an awkward smile.
Not a distant one.
A warm smile, as if no painful history existed between us.
For a moment, I forgot how much time had passed.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
Later that evening, after my friend stepped away, I found myself outside near the old school grounds.
I sat on the same bench where I used to dream about the future when I was younger.
Then I heard someone approaching.
It was Dorian.
“Mind if I sit?” he asked.
I agreed, although my heart was racing.
After a few moments of silence, he spoke.
“I never thought you wanted to talk to me.”
I looked at him, confused.
“After senior year?” I asked. “I thought you were the one who disappeared.”
His expression changed.
“Wait… I thought you rejected me.”
Those words made no sense.
Then he explained.
He had written me a note before graduation, asking me to meet him. He said he had placed it in my locker and later heard that I had declined.
But I never received that message.
I never rejected him.
We both sat there realizing that an entire chapter of our lives had been changed by something neither of us understood.
The Truth Finally Comes Out
Then we heard footsteps.
Kerensa was standing nearby.
She looked nervous.
When we asked what she knew, the truth finally came out.
She admitted that she had taken the message and told Dorian that I wasn’t interested.
Years earlier, she had feelings for him too. Jealousy had convinced her to interfere, believing the situation would eventually disappear.
Instead, it changed two people’s lives.
I was hurt. Angry. Heartbroken all over again.
The person I trusted most had unknowingly taken away a chance I never knew I had.
Letting Go of the Past
After Kerensa left, Dorian and I sat quietly.
There was no way to recover the years we lost.
We couldn’t rewrite our teenage years or erase the misunderstanding that separated us.
But we could finally talk.
We spent hours sharing stories, catching up on everything that happened during the years we had missed.
The pain that had followed me for so long slowly began to fade.
Not because the past changed.
Because I finally understood it.
A New Beginning
That night taught me something important.
Sometimes the things we believe about our past are built on incomplete stories. Sometimes one missing conversation can change everything.
Dorian and I didn’t pretend twenty years hadn’t happened.
We simply decided not to let those lost years decide the future.
The person I loved as a teenager was gone, but the person sitting beside me was someone new.
And maybe, after all this time, that was exactly how it was supposed to be.
