I Tried Unplugging My Microwave, Then Checked the Bill

It sounded like the kind of tiny household habit that might quietly save money: unplug the microwave after every use, stop the standby power drain, and see whether the electric bill moves. For two weeks in April, that idea was put to the test.

The result was not quite the budget breakthrough many people hope for when they start hunting for hidden energy waste around the house. The microwave did use a little electricity while sitting idle, but the amount was small enough that the savings were barely noticeable.

The Microwave Was Not the Real Problem

Like many modern appliances, a microwave can draw a small amount of power even when it is not actively heating food. That standby use may keep the clock lit or allow the control panel to respond quickly.

But in this case, the drain was only a few watts. Over time, that can add up, but not to a major household expense. Even with consistent unplugging, the likely savings worked out to only a handful of dollars over a full year.
