I wanted to believe there was an easy win hiding in my kitchen. Like a lot of people watching utility bills climb, I started looking at the small devices that stay plugged in all day, quietly using electricity even when they are not being used.
The microwave seemed like an obvious place to start. It has a digital clock that glows nonstop, plus internal electronics that remain on standby. So I tried a simple experiment: unplug the microwave when it was not in use and see whether the habit felt worth it.
What I learned was not what I expected.
The Savings Were Smaller Than the Hassle
A microwave does use a small amount of electricity while idle. That standby power keeps the clock and basic electronic functions running. But in most homes, that energy use is only a few watts.
