Lifeguard Paddled Toward Danger After Beach Attack

A bright morning at Coogee Beach turned terrifying when a shark attack left Leah fighting for her life and sent witnesses scrambling from the water.

According to those at the scene, the water around her changed within seconds as panic spread across the beach. In the middle of that chaos, 24-year-old volunteer lifeguard Charlie Verco moved toward the danger instead of away from it.

He paddled out on his board as others tried to get clear, knowing the shark was still close. Witnesses say he could see the animal’s large body beneath him, but he kept going until Leah resurfaced.

A Rescue Made In Seconds

When Charlie reached her, Leah was badly injured but still conscious. He pulled her onto his board and worked to get her away from the water as quickly as he could.
