South Africa River Tragedy: Missing Business Owner Linked to Crocodile Incident in Komati River
A search for a missing businessman in northeastern South Africa has taken a disturbing turn after authorities reported that human remains were discovered inside a large crocodile recovered from the Komati River.
What Happened to Gabriel Batista?
Gabriel Batista, 59, was reported missing last week after attempting to cross the Komati River. Police said his vehicle became stuck on a low bridge during the crossing. When officers arrived, the car was found abandoned and empty, according to Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo in comments carried by SABC.
With no sign of Batista at the scene, a multi-day search operation was launched involving specialized teams working the river area.
Search Effort Leads to a Massive Nile Crocodile
After four days, search teams reportedly identified a huge Nile crocodile—described as about 14 feet 9 inches long and weighing roughly 1,100 pounds—with an unusually swollen stomach. Authorities said the animal was shot from a helicopter and then airlifted from the river as part of the investigation.
