The funeral home was filled with soft music, flowers, and quiet conversations as friends and relatives gathered to say goodbye. Grief hung heavily in the room, but beneath the calm atmosphere, another emotion was beginning to surface — tension.
As I sat silently in the third row staring at my father’s casket, I noticed my brother Wesley behaving strangely. While everyone else focused on honoring my father’s memory, his attention seemed fixed somewhere else entirely.
Before the service had even ended, he walked confidently toward the podium.
Then he made an announcement that stunned the room.

Without hesitation, Wesley told everyone that our family home would be sold immediately to address what he described as “important financial obligations.”
Everyone understood what he truly meant.
His gambling debts had become impossible to ignore.
Before I could even process his words, my mother turned toward me in front of nearly forty guests and calmly said I would need to start looking for another place to live.
