The baby monitor was supposed to help me keep an ear on my six-month-old son. Instead, it became the reason I heard a woman’s voice coming from my own bedroom while I was away from home.
At first, I thought I understood what was happening. My fiancé, Daniel, had left the monitor on by mistake. Through the speaker, I heard him speaking to a woman as if they had time, as if I was still far enough away not to matter.
By the time I reached the bedroom, my mind had already built the most painful explanation. I expected betrayal. I expected excuses. I expected to see Daniel scrambling for a lie.
But the woman sitting on the edge of our bed did not look guilty. She looked tired. Almost relieved.
