COLUMBIA, S.C. — Three people have been charged in connection with the alleged physical abuse of two infants under the age of one, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to a Columbia hospital in the early morning hours of January 31 after medical staff reported signs of physical abuse on the infants. The parents, 24-year-old Amos R. Mobley Jr. and 23-year-old Daija Benjamin, were questioned along with the children’s paternal grandmother, 62-year-old Anita Hingleton-Mobley, a former Richland County School District One employee.
Investigators said they found inconsistencies in the statements provided during the questioning. All three were identified as suspects. Arrest warrants were issued on February 24.
The three individuals turned themselves in on March 3 at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Each faces two counts of inflicting great bodily injury upon a child.
Authorities stated that the infants remained under medical supervision and that their injuries were not life-threatening. The investigation remains ongoing.
