A cream-colored envelope arrived without warning on a quiet Tuesday morning, slipped beneath my apartment door before sunrise. My name was written carefully across the front in handwriting I didn’t recognize. It felt formal, almost delicate, but nothing could have prepared me for what was inside.

The return address stopped me instantly: Riverside Memorial Hospital.

My hands tightened as I unfolded the note.

It explained that my ex-wife, Rebecca, had been admitted unexpectedly and had listed me as her primary emergency contact. More importantly, she had specifically asked for me.

I read the message several times before reality finally settled in.

Ninety days earlier, our divorce had become official. I believed that chapter of my life had closed forever.

I was wrong.

The Drive That Brought Back Every Memory

The drive to the hospital felt less like traveling across town and more like driving backward through years of memories I had worked hard to bury.

I remembered our first date.

I remembered waking up to fresh coffee and her terrible singing.

When I finally walked into her hospital room, I barely recognized her.

The confident woman I once knew looked exhausted and fragile beneath the fluorescent lights.

She looked up at me and whispered softly:
