The first thing I noticed was the laughter. My son Liam had just walked into his graduation ceremony wearing a red dress, and the reaction moved through the auditorium before anyone stopped to ask why.
Students whispered. A few laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear. Parents turned in their seats. I sat frozen, trying to understand what I was seeing and fighting the instinct to run to him before the moment got worse.
But Liam did not look embarrassed. He walked to the microphone with a calmness that made the room slowly begin to quiet. Then he adjusted the stand, looked out at his classmates, and began to speak.
