More Than Just Sybil Fawlty

Though Fawlty Towers made her a household name, Scales’ talents stretched far beyond comedy. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution (1991), proving her range as both a comic and dramatic actress.

Later in life, Scales shared the screen with her husband, actor Timothy West, in Great Canal Journeys, a heartwarming documentary series that followed the couple exploring canals across Britain and Europe. Viewers were touched by their deep bond and openness about her dementia diagnosis. The show became a gentle, inspiring portrait of lasting love.

After more than 60 years of marriage, West passed away in November last year. The couple shared two sons, one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
