Reflecting on the show years later, Scales once said, “I feel very grateful for Sybil. Fawlty Towers was hard work but deeply rewarding.”

More Than Just Sybil Fawlty
Though Fawlty Towers made her a household name, Scales’ talents stretched far beyond comedy. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution (1991), proving her range as both a comic and dramatic actress.
Later in life, Scales shared the screen with her husband, actor Timothy West, in Great Canal Journeys, a heartwarming documentary series that followed the couple exploring canals across Britain and Europe. Viewers were touched by their deep bond and openness about her dementia diagnosis. The show became a gentle, inspiring portrait of lasting love.
After more than 60 years of marriage, West passed away in November last year. The couple shared two sons, one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Tributes to a National Treasure
Following the news of her passing, tributes poured in from across the entertainment world. Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth described Scales as “a funny, intelligent, gifted human being.” BBC Comedy Director Jon Petrie called her “a national treasure whose brilliance as Sybil Fawlty still makes us laugh today.”
Corinne Mills of Alzheimer’s Society also praised her courage, saying, “Prunella was an inspiration not just for her work but for speaking so openly about living with dementia, helping others understand the condition.”
