For nearly a week, Jessi had been told the same thing.
“Wait until tomorrow.”
Her husband, Luca, said it calmly every time she mentioned going to the hospital.
At first, it seemed reasonable.
She had injured her ankle at home. It was only a scrape, he said. He would clean it, cover it, and keep an eye on it.
But several days later, Jessi was running a dangerously high fever.
She was weak. She was struggling to eat. The skin around the injury was becoming increasingly swollen, warm, and discolored.
