According to the CDC, someone in the U.S. dies from cardiovascular disease every 33 seconds. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women.
“A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, happens when part of the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood,” the CDC explains. “The longer it goes untreated, the greater the damage.”
Recent research published in the National Library of Medicine shows that warning signs can appear up to a month before an attack. Here’s what to watch for:
1. Unusual Fatigue
Feeling drained after a long day is normal—but persistent, unexplained exhaustion is not.
Red flags:
- Feeling wiped out even after a full night’s sleep
- Simple activities like climbing stairs leave you unusually tired
- Sudden, severe fatigue that rest doesn’t fix
2. Shortness of Breath
Struggling to breathe with little to no exertion? Your heart may be under stress.
Red flags:
- Gasps for air during light activity or while resting
- Dizziness or lightheadedness paired with breathlessness
- Difficulty breathing while lying down
