Then something unexpected happened. The officer’s face softened. He knelt down and spoke gently:
— “You could have gotten seriously hurt. The brakes barely work. The frame is cracked. It’s not safe.”
Taking the boy by the hand, he led him across the street into a nearby toy store. Minutes later, they emerged—and the officer rolled out a brand-new, shiny bicycle with wide tires, a ringing bell, and a sturdy frame.
— “This one is safe. Your dad would want you riding something like this,” the officer said.
The boy froze, then slowly touched the handlebars, tears streaming down his face—but this time from joy. He hugged the officer, and the street that had been tense moments before now erupted in smiles.
For the first time, the boy rode freely, the sound of the bell replacing the old squeak of his rusty chain.
