Ten Years After My Twin Sister “Died,” a Dentist’s Call Brought Her Back Into My Life
Ten years ago, I said goodbye to my twin sister, Clara.
Or at least, I thought I did.
She was only twenty when her car left a dark highway, crashed down an embankment, and caught fire. The authorities could find almost nothing that could be identified. Our family held a funeral with a closed casket, and we were eventually forced to accept the only explanation we had: Clara was gone.
For years, I struggled to imagine life without the person who had been beside me since childhood.
Then, one ordinary afternoon, my phone rang.
A receptionist from a dentist’s office asked me to pick up my sister.
At first, I thought she had the wrong number.
She explained that a woman named Clara had just finished a dental procedure and was feeling groggy. Her phone had stopped working, and she needed someone to take her home.
I quietly told the receptionist that Clara was dead.
There was an awkward silence.
Then she said, “She would like to speak with you.”
A moment later, I heard a familiar voice.
She said my name.
I knew it immediately.
It was Clara.
