How to Train Your Dog to Salute, Pray and Perform 5 Impressive Tricks
Dogs are capable of learning much more than “sit” and “stay.” With patience, consistency and the right rewards, you can teach your dog entertaining tricks such as saluting, putting their paws together as if they are praying, spinning on command and even dramatically playing dead.
The secret isn’t forcing your dog to perform. It is breaking each trick into small, understandable movements and rewarding progress.
Positive-reinforcement training works by immediately rewarding the behavior you want your dog to repeat. A reward can be a small treat, a favorite toy, praise or play. A clicker can also be useful because it lets you mark the exact moment your dog performs the desired behavior.
Before starting, choose a quiet area with few distractions. Keep your first sessions short and stop while your dog is still interested.
1. Teach Your Dog to Salute 🫡
This is one of the most eye-catching tricks a dog can learn. When finished, your dog sits upright and raises one front paw toward the side of the head, creating a surprisingly convincing salute.
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Start with a reliable sit.
Ask your dog to sit directly in front of you. Reward the dog for remaining calm and focused.
Step 2: Teach the paw movement.
Hold a small treat near your dog’s nose and slowly move your hand slightly upward and toward the side of the dog’s face.
The goal is to encourage the dog to lift a paw.
The moment the paw rises, say “Yes!” or use your clicker and immediately reward the dog.
Step 3: Shape the salute.
Don’t expect the complete salute immediately. At first, reward any paw lift. Once your dog understands the game, begin rewarding only higher paw movements.
Gradually shape the movement until the paw comes close to the side of the dog’s head.
Step 4: Add your hand signal.
Give a small salute yourself immediately before your dog performs the movement.
After enough repetition, your salute can become the dog’s visual cue.
Step 5: Add the word.

There are several variations. One of the easiest is teaching the dog to place both paws onto your hand or arm before gradually shaping the position.
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Begin with “Paw.”
Your dog should ideally already understand how to give you one paw.
Ask for a paw and reward it.
Step 2: Ask for the second paw.
Keep supporting the first paw while encouraging the dog to lift the other one.
As soon as both paws are raised, mark the behavior with:
“Yes!”
Then reward immediately.
Step 3: Bring the paws closer together.
During subsequent sessions, position your hand so the dog’s paws naturally move closer together.
Don’t physically force the dog’s legs into position.
Step 4: Introduce the prayer cue.

Step 5: Increase the duration.
