The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a decision that could have lasting implications for how election laws are challenged across the country, particularly those governing mail-in voting and ballot counting timelines.
In a 7–2 ruling, the Court determined that Rep. Michael Bost (R-Ill.) has legal standing to pursue a lawsuit challenging an Illinois law that allows absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they arrive up to two weeks later. The decision revives Bost’s case, which had previously been dismissed by lower courts.
