Greg Bovino made his first public statement following his removal as “commander at large” of Minnesota’s Border Patrol, addressing the recent controversies and defending the agents under his leadership.

Bovino has been at the center of intense scrutiny after defending ICE operations and echoing the Trump administration’s stance on the fatal deaths of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Tensions in Minnesota have escalated since the start of the year, with ICE agents actively pursuing individuals suspected of being in the country without proper documentation, sparking protests and, tragically, violent incidents—including the shootings of Pretti on January 24 and Good on January 7.
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Bovino would leave Minnesota along with several deployed agents. Reports indicate he will return to his former role as chief patrol agent in California’s El Centro sector. President Trump announced that Tom Homan, dubbed his “border tsar,” will take over operations in Minnesota, overseeing what is being called Operation Metro Surge.
