One evening, Ralph returned home after a night out and quietly slipped into bed beside his sleeping wife. He soon drifted into a deep sleep.
Suddenly, he found himself standing at the gates of the afterlife.
There, Saint Peter greeted him with serious news.
“Ralph,” he said gently, “you passed away in your sleep.”
Ralph was shocked. “That can’t be! I have too much left to do. Please send me back!”
Saint Peter replied, “There is only one way to return — but you must come back as a different being… an animal.”
Though disappointed, Ralph agreed and asked to be sent somewhere close to home.
Moments later, he found himself transformed on a farm.
He looked down and realized he had feathers. He was clucking and pecking at the ground.
A rooster approached him.
“So, you’re the new hen?” the rooster asked. “How’s your first day?”
Ralph felt a strange sensation. “I feel like something is about to happen,” he said nervously.
“That just means you’re ready to lay an egg,” the rooster explained calmly. “Relax — it’s completely natural.”
Ralph decided to try.
A few seconds later… it happened. An egg!
Overwhelmed with excitement, he felt proud and amazed. Soon another egg followed. He felt an unexpected sense of accomplishment.
Just as he prepared for another moment of success —
SMACK!
Ralph felt a sharp tap on his head and suddenly heard his wife’s voice:
“RALPH! Wake up! You made a mess of the bed!”
