For decades, Michael J. Fox has been recognized around the world for his acting, humor, and remarkable career. From his memorable role on Family Ties to the Back to the Future films, he became one of Hollywood’s most familiar faces.
But away from the cameras, Fox has often described another part of his life as even more meaningful: his family.
Fox and actress Tracy Pollan have shared a marriage spanning more than three decades. Together, they raised four children—Sam, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, and their youngest daughter, Esmé. Their family life has remained an important source of joy and perspective for Fox throughout the many changes in his career.
A Father Who Believes in Being Present
Fox has spoken about the importance of making time for his children, even during periods when his professional schedule was demanding.
His approach to parenting has centered on something simple: being available when his children need him. For Fox, a missed conversation or postponed moment can sometimes mean missing an opportunity to connect.
That philosophy became especially meaningful after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991.
At the time, his oldest child, Sam, was still very young. Fox and Pollan initially kept the diagnosis private while focusing on their family and his career. When Fox eventually made his condition public in 1998, his children were able to understand more about the challenges their father was facing.
Rather than allowing his diagnosis to become the only story surrounding their family, Fox continued working, raising his children, and finding ways to contribute to the Parkinson’s community.
Meet the Fox Children
The Fox family has grown into its own collection of individual personalities and interests.
Their eldest son, Sam Michael Fox, was born in 1989. He has worked in entertainment and was involved with Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the 2023 documentary exploring his father’s life and career. The project offered a particularly personal perspective on Fox’s journey.
Twins Aquinnah Kathleen Fox and Schuyler Frances Fox were born in 1995. Both have pursued their own educational and professional interests outside the constant spotlight surrounding their parents.
Their youngest daughter, Esmé Annabelle Fox, was born in 2001. She has generally maintained a more private life, occasionally appearing alongside her family in photographs shared by her father.
