Tragedy at LaGuardia: Air Canada Express Flight Collides with Fire Truck
A routine landing turned into chaos late Sunday night at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire truck, sending shockwaves through passengers, crew, and emergency responders. What should have been the final moments of a standard journey quickly became a scene of emergency response, confusion, and concern.
The aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation, had arrived from Montreal and was taxiing on the runway at around 11:40 p.m. when it struck the fire truck. Early reports suggest the plane was moving at a low speed—roughly 24 to 30 mph—yet the impact was devastating. The fire truck had been responding to an unrelated incident nearby, creating an unforeseen and dangerous overlap of emergency activity on the runway.
Authorities confirmed the heartbreaking toll: two crew members tragically lost their lives, and multiple passengers were injured. Dozens were assessed by medical teams, with several taken to nearby hospitals. While many have since been discharged, officials noted that some injuries remain serious. Emergency personnel in the fire truck were also hurt and received immediate care.
The collision has prompted a full investigation by transportation safety authorities to determine exactly how the incident occurred and whether procedural, operational, or communication factors contributed. LaGuardia Airport faced temporary closures, flight delays, and rerouted traffic as investigators and emergency teams worked to secure the scene and ensure passenger safety.
