It was a quiet morning in the pawn shop, the kind where the city outside was just beginning to stir. The display cases gleamed, paperwork waited patiently, and the assistant expected the day to start like any other.

Then the door creaked, and she appeared. An elderly woman, moving slowly, exhaustion etched into every line of her face. Her clothes were worn, her hair slightly messy, and her eyes carried a worry that words could barely touch.

“I… I need to pawn something,” she said softly.

Taking a deep breath, she explained. Her son was seriously ill. She had sold almost everything to pay for his treatment, and this ring—her final possession—was all that remained.
