But in reality, it serves a brilliant and practical purpose: a driveway periscope that helps drivers safely check for oncoming traffic before merging onto the road.
A Simple Solution to a Common Rural Problem
In many rural areas, driveways connect to roads that curve sharply or are surrounded by dense trees, bushes, or uneven terrain. This limited visibility can create dangerous blind spots for drivers. While roadside mirrors are sometimes used to improve sightlines, the homeowner here took a more inventive approach—one inspired by the periscope on a submarine.
