I had spent twelve months making excuses for her behavior.

That afternoon, I had reached my limit.

My Unexpected Response

I walked away from the table without saying a word.

Across the lawn, the fire pit was still burning. Sloan had placed her designer handbag beside one of the outdoor chairs, carefully positioned where everyone could see it.

I stopped beside the chair and picked it up.

“Mom?” Harrison called.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I carried the bag toward the fire pit and dropped it into the flames.

Smoke began to rise.

For a moment, nobody seemed to understand what they were seeing.

Then Harrison shouted.

“Mom! What are you doing?”

He hurried toward me, his face flushed with anger.

“Have you lost your mind? That's her bag!”

I raised one hand, asking him to stop long enough to listen.

The flames continued to spread across the leather.

“Oops,” I said quietly.

The word hung in the air.

Harrison stared at me in disbelief.

A moment later, the back door opened, and Sloan hurried outside.

“What happened?” she demanded.

Then she saw the fire.

“My bag!”

Her voice rose as she rushed toward the fire pit, only to stop when she realized the damage had already been done.

She turned toward me, her face transformed by anger and disbelief.

“You destroyed my bag!”

I didn't look away.

“Yes,” I replied.

“You're unbelievable! What is wrong with you?”

Harrison moved between us.

“Mom, you need to apologize. Right now.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

The little boy who once reached for my hand whenever he felt afraid was now standing in front of me, demanding that I apologize without asking what had happened first.

“Do you really want to do this?” I asked.

“Do what?” he snapped.
