Alex Lewis is living proof that the human spirit can overcome even the most unimaginable odds. In November 2013, what started as a seemingly ordinary cold quickly turned into a life-or-death crisis. Alex, a father from Stockbridge, Hampshire, contracted a severe streptococcal infection that escalated into toxic shock syndrome—a condition so aggressive it destroyed tissue, attacked his organs, and left doctors giving him just a three-percent chance of survival.
Within hours, his limbs and parts of his face were turning black. The flesh-eating bacteria forced surgeons to amputate almost all of his arms and legs, and reconstruct parts of his lips using skin from his shoulder—a procedure that made medical history. “It was brutal,” Alex recalled. “I had to relearn everything: eating, dressing, moving in a wheelchair.”
Despite the staggering challenges, Alex refused to let his circumstances define him. His wife, Lucy Townsend, and their young son, Sam, became his pillars of strength, helping him regain independence. With the aid of prosthetics and adaptive technology, Alex relearned daily life and even found the courage to chase extraordinary goals.
A Life Reimagined
Today, Alex is unstoppable. He co-founded The Alex Lewis Trust and the Wild Wheelchairs Project, raising funds to improve mobility for people around the world. He’s climbed mountains in Ethiopia using specially adapted buggies, kayaked through Greenland, and cycled long distances to highlight accessibility challenges. Each adventure underscores his mission: disability does not mean limitation.
Alex has also worked on cutting-edge prosthetic and mobility projects, testing solar-powered wheelchair designs and training methods that enhance strength and independence. “EMS training has been a game-changer,” he says. “It helps me engage muscles I thought were lost forever.”
Through it all, Alex emphasizes resilience, positivity, and family. His son Sam now sees him as a role model of strength and determination. “I want him to know disability doesn’t define me,” Alex explains. “It’s just part of my story. Life is for living, and I refuse to hold back.”
