Phoebe Belle Cates was born on July 16, 1963, in New York City into a family with strong ties to the entertainment industry. Her father, Joseph Cates, was a television producer, while other relatives also worked in theater and television.

She attended prestigious schools, including the Professional Children’s School, and initially dreamed of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury during her teenage years ended those ambitions.

Afterward, Cates turned to modeling and quickly found success, appearing in fashion magazines while still a teenager. Although modeling helped launch her career, she later admitted it was never her true passion.

“I only did it for the money,” she once said, explaining that she found the work repetitive and creatively limiting.
