Fetterman Declines to Block DHS Funding Amid Democratic Pressure

“We urge you to stand with us in opposing any DHS funding bill that does not include critical reforms,” the lawmakers wrote, emphasizing the need to balance national security with accountability and the protection of civil liberties.

The letter, spearheaded by Representative Chris Deluzio of Western Pennsylvania, was signed by seven House Democrats, including Representatives Brendan Boyle, Dwight Evans, Madeleine Dean, Mary Gay Scanlon, Chrissy Houlahan, and Summer Lee.

Boyle expressed strong concerns over ICE’s practices, calling the agency “out-of-control” and warning against approving its funding without enforceable reforms.

While Fetterman acknowledged disagreements with some ICE operations, he stated that he would not support efforts that could trigger a partial federal government shutdown. “I oppose shutting the government and am open to discussions on the DHS appropriations bill,” he said. “We should address concerns about ICE practices, but not at the cost of government operations.”

Fetterman also voiced criticism of specific enforcement actions in Minneapolis and called for leadership changes at DHS but reiterated that he does not support defunding ICE. “I strongly disagree with some of ICE’s strategies and practices, and those must change,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator McCormick reaffirmed support for Border Patrol and ICE while calling for a full review of controversial operations that have drawn national attention, including a recent incident in Minneapolis.

This week’s Senate vote on the DHS funding bill is expected to be closely watched, as lawmakers attempt to reach a compromise before upcoming budget deadlines.

House Democrats continue to advocate for reforms aimed at limiting ICE authority, increasing accountability, and ensuring that DHS operations uphold public trust. Their letter warns that funding without such reforms could undermine public safety, due process, and confidence in federal agencies.
