Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama issued a joint statement over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis, calling the incident “a heartbreaking tragedy” and urging a careful review of enforcement practices.
In their statement, the Obamas said Pretti’s death—and the circumstances surrounding it—should serve as “a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party.” They added that Americans expect federal law enforcement officers to carry out their duties “in a lawful, accountable way” and to work collaboratively with state and local authorities to ensure public safety.
