January on Fifth Avenue was brutal. The sky was the color of dirty pearl, and the wind cut between skyscrapers like it was hunting exposed skin. I clutched my coffee, adjusting my scarf, trying to ignore the gnawing anxiety of a high-pressure finance career. I promised myself a better coat when my bonus came through—never imagining that by noon, I’d be jobless.
Outside my office tower, a woman sat pressed against the cold marble, wrapped in a thin sweater, her hands tucked beneath her arms. People sidestepped her like she was invisible. When she asked for spare change, something stopped me. My fingers found no cash, just lint and a receipt. Without thinking, I unzipped my jacket and offered it.
She accepted quietly, slipping into the sleeves, and pressed a rusty coin into my hand. “Keep this,” she whispered. “You’ll know when to use it.”
