I met Soren on one of those dating apps that feels more like scrolling faces than finding connection. I wasn’t expecting much. Then we matched.

He lived in a quiet coastal town in Norway. I was stuck in a cramped flat in Bristol, watching the same rainy view every day. While I complained about my job and its small humiliations, he sent photos of the Northern Lights dancing over snow-covered hills. “You’d love it here,” he’d write. His world felt alive; mine, stagnant. For months, his messages were air I didn’t realize I was holding my breath for.

Late-night video calls became steady rituals. He listened. He remembered details. He spoke about hiking trails, translation work, and daily routines. Calm, careful, deliberate. Too calm, maybe. I stayed cautious—experience had taught me people retreat when connection asks for weight.

One rough day, after my efforts at work were credited to someone else, I decided to test him. I typed: “I quit my job. I’m coming. Nothing’s keeping me here,” and hit send.

I hadn’t quit. I just wanted to see if he’d step up—or disappear.

His reply came immediately: “Finally. I’ll check the train from Oslo. Send me your flight number so I can prepare the guest room.”

He leaned in.

Then, an hour later:
“Don’t book anything yet. There’s something I need to tell you first.”
