12-Year-Old’s Letter to the Future Goes Viral After Tragic Passing

Most kids dream about college, traveling the world, and making lifelong friends. Taylor Smith, a bright 12-year-old from Johnson City, Tennessee, was no different. Her days were filled with family, friends, and marathon sessions of Doctor Who.

In April 2013, Taylor wrote a heartfelt letter to her future self, tucked it in a box in her room, and marked it with clear instructions: “To be opened by Taylor Smith on April 12, 2023 only (unless said otherwise).”

Tragically, Taylor never got the chance to see her dreams unfold. Just months after writing the letter, she passed away due to sudden pneumonia complications, leaving her parents, Tim and Mary Ellen Smith, devastated.

While going through her things, the family found the letter. Moved by her words and the hope they carried, they decided to share it online, giving comfort and inspiration to countless people. Mary Ellen wrote:

“I can’t bring her back, but I’m so grateful people have been inspired by her story.”

A Glimpse into Taylor’s Heart and Hopes

In the letter, Taylor imagined her life ten years in the future:

“Dear Taylor,
How’s life? Life is pretty simple right now (10 years in your past). Congratulations on graduating high school! If you didn’t, go back and keep trying. Get that degree! Are you (we) in college? If not, I understand. We do have pretty good reasoning, after all.
