My husband grabbed her arm just in time.
Our daughter froze, startled by the panic in his voice.
“Don’t touch it!” he shouted.
For a second, none of us understood what was happening. The tree looked ordinary except for the unusual dark stripes running along the bark. Around the base, tall grass swayed gently in the wind, hiding most of the trunk from view.
