Ava Sterling stood beneath the crystal chandeliers of the luxury hotel ballroom, gently rocking her four-month-old twins while trying to ignore the exhaustion crushing her entire body.
For months, her life had revolved around sleepless nights, endless feedings, and the overwhelming emotional weight of becoming a new mother. She barely recognized herself anymore. Her designer gown no longer fit perfectly, dark circles rested beneath her eyes, and every muscle in her body ached from caring for two infants almost entirely alone.
Still, despite the exhaustion, she showed up for one reason:
Her husband.
That evening’s corporate gala was meant to celebrate Liam Sterling’s latest business achievement. Ava thought attending would make him happy. At the very least, she hoped he would appreciate the effort it took for her to leave home with newborn twins just to support him.
Instead, the moment Liam saw her standing near the ballroom entrance, his expression hardened with disgust.
Without offering to hold the babies or asking if she was okay, he immediately pulled her aside and lowered his voice sharply.
“What are you wearing?” he hissed.
Ava froze.
Liam glanced around nervously at the elegant guests surrounding them before continuing.
“You look exhausted. Everyone else here actually made an effort tonight.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
But he wasn’t finished.
He began comparing her to the glamorous women attending the gala — women with flawless makeup, expensive gowns, and carefree smiles untouched by motherhood.
Then came the sentence that shattered something inside her completely.
“Use the back exit when you leave,” he whispered coldly. “I don’t want my colleagues seeing you like this.”
For several seconds, Ava simply stared at him.
The man she loved.
The father of her children.
The person she sacrificed everything to support.
