For almost two decades, my mother, Cathy, was a familiar and friendly face at Beller’s Bakery. She knew many of the regular customers by name and was always ready with a smile, a kind word, and a little extra patience.
People often came into the bakery for coffee and pastries, but many also appreciated the welcoming atmosphere she helped create.
One rainy evening, as she was preparing to close the bakery, Mom noticed a person sitting outside who appeared to need help. He was a veteran and was soaked from the weather.
Mom gathered some leftover pastries that were not going to be sold and offered them to him. To her, it was a simple gesture of kindness.
