Neighbors Thought She’d Lost It When She Covered Her Roof With Wooden Stakes — Then Winter Arrived

All summer long—and deep into autumn—an elderly woman climbed onto her roof every single day, hammer in hand, driving sharp wooden stakes into the shingles. By the time the leaves turned, her roof looked like a fortress. Neighbors whispered, some shivered, and most were sure she had finally lost her mind… until winter arrived.

At first, the villagers only watched. Then the rumors began:

“Have you seen her roof?”
“Yes. Ever since her husband passed, she’s… different.”

After losing her husband the year before, the woman had withdrawn. Quiet, solitary, almost invisible—until this strange, jagged crown of stakes appeared above her house. Each day, more stakes went up, sharp and deliberate. To the outside eye, it looked threatening. Some claimed she was warding off spirits. Others whispered of a bizarre renovation—or even a secret cult.

“No sane person would do that,” murmured the villagers. “It’s all spikes. Just looking at it gives me chills.”

But what no one saw was the care behind each nail and stake. She selected the wood herself, dry and sturdy, sharpened to precision. Every stake was placed methodically, reinforcing weak spots, strengthening her home against forces most had long forgotten.

Finally, someone dared to ask:

“Why are you doing this? Are you afraid?”
