Pentagon Confirms Three U.S. Fighter Jets Have Been Shot Down

In a startling military incident, three U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses while on a mission defending against attacks by Iranian aircraft, missiles, and drones, according to a statement released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Monday.

Despite the intensity of the incident, all six aircrew members were able to eject safely and have since been recovered. CENTCOM confirmed that the airmen are in stable condition and receiving medical evaluations following the emergency ejection. The statement emphasized that the incident, while serious, resulted in no casualties thanks to the skill and training of the aircrew.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is a highly advanced multirole fighter jet, designed for precision strikes and long-range missions. These aircraft are typically deployed in regions of heightened tension to protect U.S. forces and allies while responding to hostile threats. The jets were engaged in a defensive operation at the time, countering attacks from Iranian drones, missiles, and aircraft—a scenario that underscores the complex and often fast-moving nature of modern aerial combat.

Mistaken or “friendly fire” incidents, while rare, highlight the challenges of coordinating multinational defense systems in high-stakes environments. Military analysts note that miscommunication, sensor errors, or split-second decision-making can occasionally result in unintended outcomes, even among allied forces. CENTCOM has pledged a full investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the jets being targeted by Kuwaiti air defenses.
