Update: Investigators Clarify Source of Odor at Home Linked to Savannah Guthrie’s Family
Authorities have provided new details after concerns were raised about a strong odor detected inside a residence connected to the family of Savannah Guthrie.
Earlier, service dogs alerted officers to a noticeable smell coming from a bathroom drain, prompting a closer inspection and briefly raising concerns about a potentially serious issue. However, officials now say the source appears to be far less alarming.
What Investigators Found
After the initial alert, plumbing specialists were called in to assess the situation. Their conclusion: the odor was consistent with a drain that had not been used for an extended period.
In typical plumbing systems, a small amount of water sits in the pipe’s trap, acting as a barrier that prevents sewer gases from entering the home. When a drain goes unused for days or longer, that water can evaporate, allowing those gases to rise back up—often creating a strong and unpleasant smell.
