Remembering Dash Crofts and the Duo That Shaped a Generation

The world of soft rock is saying goodbye to one of its most recognizable voices. Darrell “Dash” Crofts, best known as one half of the iconic duo Seals & Crofts, passed away on March 25, 2026, at the age of 85 after complications following heart surgery. His gentle vocals and signature mandolin helped shape a sound that defined an era and comforted millions of listeners throughout the 1970s.

Born Darrell George Crofts on August 14, 1940, in Cisco, Texas, music was woven into his life from the very beginning. He was born alongside his twin sister Dorothy, and the nickname “Dash” came from a playful joke his mother made after entering the twins in a baby contest—suggesting they should be called “Dot and Dash.” The name stayed with him for life, even though his musical style was known more for calm harmony than speed.

Crofts didn’t start out on the instrument fans would later associate with him. Early in his career, he played drums before meeting saxophonist and future partner Jim Seals. Their collaboration would become one of the most recognizable partnerships in soft rock history. Before forming their famous duo, they performed in several groups, including bands connected to well-known touring acts of the time, gaining valuable experience on stage and in the studio.
