Before Janis Joplin became a symbol of raw emotion, fearless expression, and rock-and-roll freedom, she was a young girl growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, trying to understand why she never seemed to fit in.

Born on January 19, 1943, Joplin was raised in a structured household where discipline, education, and traditional values mattered.
