She’s Known as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s Wife — But Hollywood Fans Know Her Too

If you ask any TV fan, Curb Your Enthusiasm remains one of the sharpest, funniest sitcoms ever created, and a big part of that magic comes from the dynamic between Larry David and Cheryl Hines. The chemistry, subtle tension, and witty banter between Cheryl and Larry make the show feel just as gripping as a prime-time drama—without ever taking itself too seriously.

Born September 21, 1965, in Miami Beach, Florida, Cheryl was raised Catholic in Tallahassee. Growing up in a modest household with two brothers and a sister, she was encouraged to pursue education and success, and she found her calling in acting early on. A member of the Young Actors Theatre throughout high school, Cheryl credits her father, James Hines, with instilling her comedic instincts. “He was quick-witted, always ready with a phrase that made us laugh until the end,” she recalled after his passing in 2015.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida, Cheryl moved to Los Angeles to chase her Hollywood dreams. The early years were tough—she worked as a waitress, TV reporter, phone operator, and even Rob Reiner’s assistant, while enduring the harsh realities of Hollywood. One early boss even suggested she “get a boob job” to succeed. Cheryl, however, stayed true to herself. “Goldie Hawn didn’t have big ones, and she was incredible,” she later said, deciding to pursue comedy on her own terms.

Her big break came at The Groundlings, the legendary improv and sketch theater, where she honed her comedic skills. Under the mentorship of Lisa Kudrow, Cheryl developed the timing and improvisational talent that would define her career. In 2000, Larry David cast her as his wife on Curb Your Enthusiasm, seeking a fresh, unknown actress—and Cheryl nailed it. The majority of dialogue on the show is improvised, yet Cheryl’s performance feels effortless, blurring the line between character and reality.

Beyond Larry, Cheryl’s career includes film roles such as RV, where she co-starred with the late Robin Williams. She describes Williams as one of the kindest actors she’s ever met, making every cast member feel seen and appreciated. Cheryl has also rubbed elbows with legends like Barbra Streisand, Nick Hornby, and even once shared lemonade with Fidel Castro—an encounter she still remembers vividly.

Off-screen, Cheryl’s personal life has made headlines. She was first married to producer Paul Young, with whom she shares a daughter, Catherine Rose. In 2014, she married Robert F. Kennedy Jr., joining the iconic Kennedy family. Cheryl credits her husband with bringing balance and shared values into her life, though she has spoken publicly about navigating controversies surrounding his statements. “Sometimes you just need to watch 30 Rock and take a breath,” she joked.

Cheryl also explored sitcoms beyond Curb, starring as Dallas Royce in ABC’s Suburgatory, a role that showcased her comedic range. Even a botched Botox gag on the show demonstrated her fearless approach to humor.

From improv stages to Hollywood sets, political circles, and iconic sitcoms, Cheryl Hines has proven she’s more than just Larry David’s TV wife—she’s a comedian, actress, and personality who continues to shine on her own terms.
