Spain Pushes Back After Trump Threatens Trade Over Iran Strikes

Tensions are rising between Spain and the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade with Madrid over its refusal to support U.S. military action against Iran.

Strong Words from Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez didn’t mince words. Speaking from La Moncloa, he said:

“We will not be complicit in something that is bad for the world and that is also contrary to our values and interests simply out of fear of reprisals… The government’s position can be summed up in four words: No to war.”

Sánchez criticized the U.S. and Israel’s attacks on Iran as an “unjustified and dangerous military intervention” that violates international law.

U.S. Bases Off-Limits

Spanish officials also made it clear that U.S. military bases in Spain will not be used for operations against Iran. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated:

“The bases are not being used—nor will they be used—for anything that is not in the agreement [with the U.S.] nor for anything that isn’t covered by the UN charter.”
