Tennessee Prepares for Rare Female Execution in Modern History

For the first time in more than two centuries, Tennessee is preparing to carry out the execution of a woman, a development drawing nationwide attention and renewed discussion about capital punishment in the United States. Legal experts and advocacy groups are closely monitoring the case, as it could influence how the justice system approaches similar cases in the future.

The woman involved is Christa Gail Pike, 49, who has been incarcerated for nearly 30 years. Pike was convicted in 1996 for a crime committed at the age of 18, making her one of the youngest women in the nation at the time to receive a death sentence. Since then, she has remained the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, with her case frequently cited in debates over sentencing for young offenders and the use of the death penalty for female inmates.
