The sage pointed toward the donkey standing stubbornly in place. “That animal watched you tie the others. Then it watched you pretend to tie it. To the donkey, there is no difference. It believes it is tied—so it stays.”
The farmer frowned, still unsure, but decided to follow the advice anyway. He walked back to the third donkey, reached toward its neck, and carefully mimicked the motion of untying a rope—loosening an imaginary knot, pulling away something that wasn’t really there.
Then he patted the donkey gently and said, “Alright, let’s go.”
To his amazement, the donkey immediately began walking forward as if nothing had ever stopped it.
The farmer’s eyes widened. “Incredible… there was nothing there!”
The sage chuckled softly. “Exactly.”
As the farmer gathered his donkeys and prepared to leave, he couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. Before heading off, he turned back and asked, “Is this just about donkeys… or something more?”
The sage looked at him kindly and replied,
“It’s about all of us. Many people are held back not by real limits, but by what they believe is holding them. Fear, doubt, habits… they can feel just as strong as a rope.”
The farmer stood silent for a moment, letting the words sink in. Then he nodded slowly, thanked the sage once more, and continued on his journey—this time thinking a little differently about what truly holds someone back.
