Unlike people, who rely mostly on sight and sound, dogs understand the world primarily through scent. Their noses are incredibly powerful, capable of detecting odors at levels humans can barely imagine. To a dog, every person carries a unique chemical signature filled with information about mood, health, stress, and even emotional state.
That’s why dogs often focus on areas like the groin or armpits.
These parts of the body contain apocrine sweat glands, which release stronger scent markers and pheromones than other areas. While humans usually don’t notice these natural signals, dogs instantly pick them up. In canine communication, this is normal behavior—it’s essentially their version of gathering information during an introduction.
